The Boombottle

Upcycling.  Now there’s another one of those catchphrases that our parents probably never used!  But it’s 2014 and we are reminded time and again about how we are abusing our planet, about how much garbage we create yearly and how much of that can actually be re-used.  After you’ve eaten your baked beans, you can recycle the tin can and it can be back on the shelf as a new can in 2 months.  In the US alone, they use 100 million tin cans every single day and by recycle it, you can save 75% of the cost involved to make one from scratch.  I get that throwing stuff in the garbage damages the environment and we can agree that garbage strewn all over the place is unsightly, unsafe and unhygienic.  So in steps ‘upcycling’.  Instead of contributing to the tons of garbage created each day, by throwing things away, and instead of spending money on new designer items, why not use your ‘garbage’ again as part of some DIY design and make something new!

This really appeals to me, but I must confess that I lack the creativity to do that.  Why not give the tin cans a good wash and upcycle them as planters for herbs, or decorate them with colour or smart labels and use it to store stationary or art supplies.  I’ve noticed that tyres are being used for various creative applications too and I’ve seen swings and see-saw being made out of the humble tyre, as well as using them for vegetables or flower planters and a tractor tyre being used as an entire mini vegetable garden!  220 Million car tyres are discard in the USA alone, every year, so I’d think every home should have something made out of an upcycled tyre!  To be brutally honest though, I’m not rocked by truck tyre herb gardens and tin can lamp shades, although you might be; but I am however, moved by the Boombottle!

The Boombottle is almost too simple for words.  Imagine a 5 liter plastic bottle,  fashioned into a glow-in-the-dark portable speaker, with some serious bass! It’s as simple as it sounds, and after reading about it, I can’t help but wonder why I didn’t think of it!  Kevin Cheung from Hong Kong,  is the man behind the Boombottle.  It’s a discarded vinegar bottle that has been fitted with a discarded car speaker and a few LED bulbs. It is airsealed and the screw-top lid has been re-fashioned to be the volume control!  I love it! It has a small pouch fitted on the side to hold your Smartphone or iPod, where you’d also find the on/off switch and the cable that plugs into your device’s earphone jack. Powered by 4 small batteries that really only light up the LED bulbs, you’ve got a very energy efficient, portable boombox that is a great conversation starter and as ‘green’ as you’re going to get when it comes to upcycling and just plain genius.

boom bottle ALL

And it doesn’t end there for Mr Cheung.  Kevin is producing these at a steady rate, and the Boombottles are being assembled by the St James Shelter workshop in Wan Chai, providing job opportunities for people with disabilities.   So it’s benefiting the communities, shows great entrepreneurial spirit, helps the environment, and some how, among all that is to buy, having something upcycled, is even more desirable.  Such is the world we live in, that you can buy a Boombottle online for $112!  I kid you not!  Suddenly the tin can herb planter seems like such a good idea!

Have you ever upcycled anything?  What did you make?  Let us know in the comment section below.

Genius Baby

Every parent thinks their little sweetheart is the cutest and the smartest.  To mommy and daddy they can seldom do any wrong, and when they see other kids do what they do, there is often a whole lot of comparing going on.  When you watch this little one, you’re going to get immediately suspicious or maybe you’ll be totally awestruck!  So let’s watch him already, this genius baby, and you can make up your own minds!

Our Hope

0

Last weekend, my neighbour went off to get married.  He headed up country to where his family and his new bride’s family lives and he returned this past weekend, looking like a changed man.  I think the ladies would freely use the word ‘glowing’.  His new wife is probably ‘glowing’ too, but as a man, I’ll just stick with ‘happy’!  So, while they were off on their new adventure,  which included a brief honeymoon somewhere secretive, I was volunteered by my wife to be the one to care for his large window box of herb plants.  It didn’t go well.  I’ve never successfully grown herbs before and assumed it couldn’t be too hard. Let me just say that the plants didn’t die, and I watered them well and trimmed them etc, but I was not popular on his return.  He was really unhappy about the way his plants looked and how I’d cared for them, and I thought they looked great.  He used a phrase that went something like: ‘I’m sure we’ll be able to rehabilitate them somehow’ and I think he was a bit harsh; but then again, they are his plants, so what can I say about it.  It goes without saying that it bothered me, and in true Brad fashion, I needed to think about all of this and it became a devotional right there in my head.  One about hope.

My friendly neighbour had a lot on his mind heading out of town last week, and one of those thoughts was that he hoped he’d see his plants in the same or better condition on his return, but according to him, he didn’t.  He was clearly disappointed.  I immediately thought of Proverbs 13:12.  I know that it’s only herbs, people, but stick with me for the principle.

Hope deferred makes the heart sick…

When you put your hope in people, or the weather, or in your favourite sports team, or even (gulp) the church, you are going to end up with a sick heart somewhere along the line.  That’s what you get for relying on something fickle, fragile and part of a sinful world.  So what if you put your heart in the hands of One that will not disappoint?  That would be the best thing you could do.  Hope has been defined as ‘a positive expectation of something good’ and with God that is just it:  Our hope in a good God with love for us and a desire to see us have something good.  And the good is not only for our life here on earth but ultimately, a hope in something beyond this; a hope of glory.

Romans 5:5  And this hope will not lead to disappointment. For we know how dearly God loves us, because he has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love.

This is the foundation of our HOPE.  God himself has promised us His hope, and it is NOT one that is going to make our hearts sick, but make our hearts glad as we wait on Him, knowing what He has in store for us is greater than we could ever imagine.  Love does that.

Goodbye Senzo Meyiwa

0

There never seems to be a good time to talk about death.  There’s all the emotions that you feel and when it’s someone as ‘big’ as South African football darling, Senzo Meyiwa, it’s the emotions of the nation and the world’s football fraternity.   I’ve been reading #RIPsenzo tweets all morning and South Africans have forgotten about Oscar Pistorius, poor service delivery and the gold price, to mourn, shake their fists, and launch conspiracy theories.  Two things have occurred to me today in wake of the news of Senzo.  The first and most glaringly obvious is the love the nation had for this one man.  Someone who not everybody knew about until the 7am news this morning.  A man who inspired scores of young football enthusiasts, and the countless Orlando Pirates football fans, as well as those that followed their national team closely. The other really noticeable occurrence on a day like today, is that the nation of South Africa is again united and it took yet another tragedy.  The last time things felt like this was the 5th of December 2013 – the day that Nelson Mandela died.  Let’s not get the 2 men confused, there is no comparison, it’s just that that was the last time this country acted quite like this.  Sepp Blatter tweeted his condolences a few hours ago and from a football perspective, that is the right thing to do. Sepp and almost every recognisable sports star, from swimming, to golf, to cricket, to the National Olympic Committee.  Senzo Meyiwa was the national team’s captain and an inspiration to the nation.  The next game that Bafana Bafana was scheduled to play in the African Cup of Nations Qualifiers, was against Sudan.  If he had kept their opponents goalless,  he would have been only the 2nd South African goalkeeper in history to keep a clean sheet in 500 minutes of football.  So this man was the business, and his countrymen know they have been robbed.  For what?  A cell phone?  Police still seem unsure as to how it all went down last night but it would seem, for now, that it was a robbery gone wrong.

It seems like today has been one press conference after another, with the minister of Police offering a R250 000 (almost US$23,000) reward for information that will lead to an arrest. Shakes Mashaba, the national coach, admitted to having Senzo’s name at the top of his team sheet, and needed a break to wipe away the tears.  Few have been as vocal as the minister for sport and recreation, Fikile Mbalula, who said: “We’ve lost a role model, a patriot and a great winner. He dedicated his life to his teams.  Senzo worked for every accolade he achieved; he was a star and the criminals have robbed us of his brightness.  There is no grave big enough for Senzo.” Yes, this man is loved,  and the love is growing, even as funeral arrangements are made.

Why does it take a ‘national’ tragedy to create unity?  Crime is rife in South Africa and for once we agree that it seems to be out of control.  Will something be done because today we have a collective voice; one of anger and desperation?  Thoughts of life and death go through one’s mind and the confession that ‘it can all end in the blink of an eye’.  Do we need to prepare somehow for that day, since it might happen way before that old age we hope to achieve?  Today is a day of questions, and not all of them have anything to do with the late Senzo Meyiwa.  Are you ready, or does it not really even matter?  Perhaps you’ll rather just go about your business, waiting for the 6pm news for more info on what may have gone down south of Johannesburg last night; after all, it couldn’t possibly happen to you.

Weekend Sports Wrap – 27 Oct ’14

It’s been quite a sporting weekend, with Serena Williams showing her class and sealing that World Number 1 spot for the 4th year. Manchester United stole a draw from the jaws of defeat, and Drogba and Eto’o represented our continent, showing their class in the Premier League.  Sadly, the one story that has no one cheering is the shooting of South Africa’s goalkeeper and Captain, Senzo Meyiwa, who was killed at his girlfriend’s home, in Vosloorus, south of Johannesburg, South Africa.  Let’s check in on the details in our Weekend Sports Wrap.

Journey to Freedom

0

I like Michelle Williams.  The poor lady has had to put up with so much, with being a third of Destiny’s Child and seeming to always play second fiddle to Beyoncé and Kelly.  It seems more like ‘third fiddle’ if you check out the #PoorMichelle pages that litter the ‘net.  I can’t help but feel for her, seeing a whole tribe out to discredit her amazing abilities, all for a laugh and to prove a point we all seem to be buying into.  8 Grammy nominations and 1 coveted golden gramophone clearly speak of her abilities and then we haven’t even spoken about other pop and gospel music silverware and what a great stage actress she is.  She has had her fair share of struggles and it’s not all the fault of rude ‘fans’, as she has battled with clinical depression for many years, with days that she had to just will herself out of bed and do whatever she needed to, to be happy.

She’s come a long way since those days and knowing what you’ve just read, it’s easy to figure out why her latest solo album is called ‘Journey to Freedom’.  Williams said, in relation to Journey to Freedom:  “I’m still standing; stronger and free from what people think.  I’m here to do me. And that’s what this journey is about: encouraging people to trust their inner voice and go for it.”

I’m still standing; stronger and free from what people think.  I’m here to do me.

Journey to Freedom has been available to download for a while now, actually, just over 2 weeks, and it’s one for your collection.  I’m not just saying that.  As a citizen of Africa, the beats hit home. The African rhythms are contagious and combine it with the words ‘If Jesus says yes, nobody can say no’, you’ve got a gospel hit.  And, in what the media might call an ironic twist, the truth about her relationship with her Destiny ‘girls’ shines through as she teams up with Beyoncé and Kelly Roland to bring us the hit single.  We’ve waited over 5 years for Williams’ album and it’s a whole different Michelle we’re getting here.  12 tracks in all make up Journey to Freedom, with help from some of mainstream R&B’s biggest names, and it makes you want to dance, with the messages of strength, hope and joy shining through. The lead single, which features Fantasia, is called ‘If we had your eyes’ and speaks of life seen from God’s perspective.  It initially comes across as fairly generic but there’s one thing I’ve learned about music through the years is that although the true heart is found in the lyrics, having a sure hit will require a riff or hook that catches you off guard with a magnetism that grabs and holds you for reason you can’t put into words.  This song might not have that, but it has heart and Michelle’s reputation to carry it through and the last minute of the song might just be the highlight, with that ‘realness’ shining through as Michelle ‘talks’ to us about life.

Making this album has done something remarkable to Michelle Williams.

Making this album has done something remarkable to Michelle Williams.  We are getting a glimpse of a real person; not hidden behind other big names, or illness or insecurity.  She has a heart overflowing with experiences that might resonate with what you’ve been through. She has come through it singing, and it’s contagious.

Have a Little Faith

0

Faith.  We have it, we can always do with more of it, but we think we never have enough. We need faith for when we’re trying to understand or even believe in God, faith to encourage us and give us hope through our circumstances.  We need faith that God is all we need to make it through this life.  Our faith gets thin and then it can get boosted by our experiences.  I’d love to see a graph of my faith levels as I go through life.  I bet it would look rather erratic.   We mostly deal with matters of the ‘heart’.  These are the things we can’t feel or see and that is the kind of faith you’ll read about in 2 Corinthians 5:7.  I recently read the 1st chapter of Luke’s gospel and it made me smile.  Here’s an account of the father of John the Baptist, Zechariah, and his encounter with the angle Gabriel in the temple, next to the altar of incense.

I’d love to see a graph of my life’s faith levels.  I bet it would be so erratic!

He was a priest, was old Zechariah and his division was on duty and he was selected by a lottery system to be the one to light the incense in the temple.  It was a big job, and all his friends were waiting outside, praying for him.  It was just that he was in there for a very long time; long enough to get everyone worried.  So now the angel Gabriel appears and tell him all about the son that he is going to have and since Zech and his wife, Elizabeth are really old, this is both a shock, and also the best bit of news yet.  I’m sure that takes some faith but then he opens his mouth and says something that made me wonder how I would act if I were ever in that situation.  ‘How can I be sure of this?’   I ask you!  A heavenly being appears in the holy place in the temple of the Lord and shares life and history-altering news and all he can say is ‘Are you sure?!’  The response from the angel is a wake up call.  Let me paraphrase from Luke 1:19:  ‘I am Gabriel.  I stand in the very presence of the God of the universe.  That’s what I do.  And now when I tell you news from the lips of God Himself you ask me if it’s correct?!  Seriously?  For your blatant lack of faith in the face of this obvious bit of incredible truth, you will be struck dumb until your son John is born!’

Find peace in your struggles, and when faith runs thing, think of Zechariah.

So we lack faith in the unseen and it has been proved by Zechariah and many others before and after, that we lack faith in the face of the blatantly obvious.  How do we get through this?  I guess it’s like everything in our walk with God; we take it day by day.  We let God deal with our unbelief in the gracious, loving way He does.  We work out our salvation with fear and trembling, bringing our sinful humanity into alignment with our rescued spirits.  What else can we do but to walk daily in the Grace that has been extended to us, getting to know God better and ourselves too.  Take heart that you can do this.  You have what it takes to get through this life as a believer in Christ.  Hold onto God, and let Him carry you through.  Find peace in your struggles and when faith runs thin, think of old Zechariah’s story.  His lack of faith was highlighted, but his destiny was never shifted.  You can do it.  Just have a little faith.

Mondays mean we bring you the latest sporting highlights from the weekend, where Mikko Ilonen won the World Match Play title and with that the biggest win of his career.  Valentino Rossi can still win a Grand Prix at the age of 35 and it was his 250th Premier Class win.   We saw heaps of football action, from Serie A, to La Liga and of course English Premier league matches and we’ve got all those details for you on the 1 Africa Weekend Sports Wrap.

You Matter

I have a dream.  Part of that big dream is to make a difference in someone’s life.  The sort of ‘difference’ that at some point someone might recall something I’ve shared as truth or encouragement and it will reshape their reality.  I don’t care if they never remember my name, but may they remember a wise word or 2.  I shared that dream a few days ago with a few teenagers.  I’d been asked to spend a few minutes with them, encouraging them and sharing a motivational thing or 2, as they prepared to be the senior class of their school next year.  It turned into 30 minutes and it was a big deal to me; being asked to do something so ‘big’ and seeing it have an impact on them.

I received a thank you note on behalf of the class and one girl had written that she is sure that part of my dream had come true that day.  I saw another student really moved by something I’d said, as I shared something really heavy from my own life.  Part of my dream had come true.  Why is this so important to me?  I’m totally convinced that if I asked you to raise your hands if you would like to influence someone positively in your life, you’d say yes.  God has place that in our hearts somewhere, the desire to care for and nurture others.  It’s important to me because in God’s eyes I know I matter.  You Matter.  We have been created as people of purpose by a Creator whose fingerprint is on us; whose signature is on the artwork of our lives.  If we can believe the truth that we matter, we will want to serve God, and serve others.  It becomes part of what we’ve been made to do.  Do we get it right all the time?  No way, lets’ not kid each other, but we can all be used by God for something!  That, I suppose, is why I carry this dream, and now I’m wearing it on my sleeve.  I’m starting to develop a confidence, not in myself, but in my ability to be used by God.  I don’t want this to be about me, but what God can do though me.  God knows the day I committed to being used by Him, and He has not shied away from answering my call, as He has done for countless others.  I matter.  You Matter.

1 John 4:19-21  We love because he first loved us. Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister is a liar. For whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have not seen. And he has given us this command: Anyone who loves God must also love their brother and sister.

We don’t need to struggle for our identity because it is sure in Him.  We are loved and we can love others, all because He loved us first.  This doesn’t happen one night by osmosis or by chance; it takes a few hard knocks and the pursuit of truth, and it can take time. Accept the Grace extended, chase the Truth and stand firm in who you are.  In Whose you are.  Now step out and make a difference; you know you want to!
