I Don’t Need A Man

1

It’s a man’s world, they say. But is it really? The world has experienced a significant paradigm shift, such that it’s no longer surprising to see a woman become the major breadwinner. The world over, women are taking a stand and taking ownership their lives. Ladies are climbing up the corporate ladder and, in education, they are making greater strides than their male counterparts. It’s become rare to find a woman needing a man to complete her world. Yet, while it’s admirable to see a woman being able to hold her own, it is also startling to see some women take the “I’m independent” mindset way too far especially when you hear statements like “I don’t need a man”.

A few days ago I overheard some shocking declarations from some women who say they don’t need a man in their lives. I was struck by one in particular: “I see a man the way I see a nice pair of shoes or a nice handbag — a complement to my outfit. I’m the full package.”

A lot of women are successful in their careers. They are providing for themselves and are accomplishing what was once accomplished by man only and therefore wonder : what do they need a man for? With the help of technology, even activities which only a man can authentically provide to a woman now have substitutes. So it seems having a man has become like taking on extra luggage a woman can very well do without.

I am a firm believer that every individual, male and female, has a unique purpose in life and can find fulfillment in achieving that purpose. But, at the same time, I believe men were created for a purpose in a woman’s life higher than what women with distorted views of what it means to be independent are reducing them to – sperm donors, as this appears to be the only thing the woman of the 21st century can’t do for herself.

We carry many hurtful experiences from the past, perhaps men we trusted in the past failed us; but this shouldn’t take away from the original plan God had in creating male and female as unique as they are, with very different abilities. There is a value and positive impact a good man can bring into a woman’s life that no sustainable paycheck or degree on the wall or anything in this world can replace. Surely, God in all His greatness, couldn’t have made a strong creature called ‘man’ for him to end up being like an extra item of  some little value comparable to a nice pair of shoes to the delicate person of a woman.

Yes, some men failed; some fathers weren’t there when we needed them. If, as a woman, you found yourself in a position of being in charge of everything early in life because growing up you didn’t know the definition of a good man exemplified, you have no reference of one and you are led to conclude that you don’t need a man in your life, we’d like to introduce you to One Man who never fails. He’s not asking much, just for you to allow yourself to experience His love, His continuous presence, provision and protection wherever you go. The more you know Him the more you will know yourself and realize that we are on earth to live in inter-dependence with others. Turn The Light On

0

Ever thought about what darkness really means? Darkness, as the polar opposite to brightness, is understood to be an absence of visible light. The emotional response to darkness has metaphorical connotations in many cultures.

Have you ever been in a situation where the darkness was so powerful that the light could not overcome it? I remember touring a cave when all the lights were turned off. I couldn’t see a thing. I couldn’t see my hand in front of my face! And then the guide simply lit a match – one match – and we could see all over the cave, because darkness cannot overcome the light.

Jesus says He is the Light of the world – the embodiment of how to know God and how to live life. You may feel your life is engulfed in darkness. You may feel bewildered at not having discovered the answer to life. Invite Christ into your life and the light will be turned on, no matter how much darkness you’ve experienced. Life will begin to make sense and you’ll be filled with hope and understanding.

Here’s more good news. When you do this, Jesus says we can be a light to others by pointing people who are in the dark to the light – the Light of Christ.

“I have come as Light into the world, so that everyone who believes in Me will not remain in darkness.” – John 12:46

The Church Disappointed Me

0

I’ve often heard people say the reason why they don’t believe in God, or why they prefer to stand clear of anything having to do with religion is either because what they saw happening in the church was disappointing or they observed those who called themselves Christians and their lifestyle didn’t seem to uphold Christian values.
I understand that when someone or an entity you’ve put on a pedestal by virtue of a position they occupy in society, or the noble values they stand for or the trust you have placed in them disappoints you in doing something which strongly goes against everything you’ve known them to be, the disappointment is great and trust is hard to restore.
And I fully understand why it may be difficult for someone to ever trust a pastor again if one they’ve known and respected as their spiritual leader and mentor appeared in court one day on charges of rape, for instance.

The church, by virtue of it being an entity people look to for peace, wisdom, restoration and positive influence, has been an institution from which people have expected so much. When our lives, our families and our countries are in trouble, we run to the church. We saw religious leaders gathering to pray for peace in South Africa when xenophobic attacks broke in the country weeks ago, because this is expected of them. But when we see the place we seek refuge from turning to be the place where we’re hurt the most, it’s totally understandable that we would consider leaving.

But on the flip side of the coin, we’ve done well choosing for ourselves what is of importance to us in all areas of our lives. When you know something is important to you, and that your future depends on it, will you let your neighbor’s conduct influence whether you should have it or not?

Here’s the thing: We live in a world filled with imperfect people. The reality is that there are phony people everywhere. There’s not a single entity on earth today which is spared from the shrewdness of men. There are teachers in school who are advancing their own personal and sometimes wicked agenda, for what purpose? Only God knows! You find such people in the church too.
But the message of Christianity stands strong regardless of people’s mistakes, and it is: God loves you, and He wants to have a relationship with you. He wants to give you hope in a dying world. He doesn’t want you to be a victim of a broken society, He wants you to be a leader who changes things in society. Is this something you want? Would you trade this for disappointment from your room mate who is a church choir member but spent two nights in a night club and came home drunk?

I think there needs to come a point where we decide we will choose what’s good for us and let others also make their choices. If you’re convinced that you need God in your life, you need hope, then leave the baggage of hurt you’ve carried and get to know God personally. We are ready to help you make that decision today through a video we have put together. Click on the banner below and check out that video.

How To Take Great Pictures

0

Statistics show that millions of pictures are taken each day, and selfies – a photograph taken of oneself – make up a good number of those. Not wanting to miss out on a great opportunity, all the major phone makers are now going the route of adding cameras of 5MP and upwards (‘selfie cameras’, they call them) as their front-facers. Doesn’t this constant capturing of food, nature, cars, unnecessary drama or our own faces, just make us all photographers then? Well, perhaps not but let’s admit that photography has become a major part of day-to-day life. Pictures have become the new way in which we communicate. I’m sure you’ve seen, on Facebook, Instagram and other social media platforms, the rapidly increasing use of memes in the comments section. This just goes to show that photography is an imperative in today’s world. Images rule, as evidenced by the rise of Instagram and Snapchat

Unlike in olden days where we had to use the services of a professional photographer to get good quality pictures, today, we have the tools that allow us to take high quality photos at our finger tips – smartphones. But though we have these amazing tools, every day we stumble upon some awfully captured pictures on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter. You know the ones I’m talking about – the blurry selfie or that badly exposed group photo. If you’re guilty of having taken some awful pics, don’t feel bad! In this post, we’ve got some cool tips to make you a better photographer.

The video below presents 9 photo composition tips based on the work of American editorial Photographer Steve McCurry . These are basics photography rules which, if followed, can produce amazing results. Why don’t you study these tips, put them into practice next time you take pictures, and share those photos with us. We’d be thrilled to see how these tips have worked for you.

Kanye West Becomes A Doctor

0

Coming from being a college dropout to receiving an honorary degree is, by anyone’s standards, an achievement worth noting. On Monday 11 May, American pop artist Kanye West aka Yeezy, a recent convert into the world of fashion design, and as of late, Dr West, was awarded an honorary doctorate from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. According to DNAinfo, West was recognized for his “transformative, genre-defying work”.

In his acceptance speech, Kanye noted that the honorary doctorate will help to establish his credibility as an artist. Many have argued that Kanye West does not deserve such an honour and therefore won’t give him the esteem due a Doctor. But for us at 1Africa the focus is neither here nor there. We look at Kanye West’s achievement through the lens of it being an inspiration to every young person who may have thought their lives cannot amount to anything because there are certain privileges they did not have. Are we saying drop out of school and you’ll be okay? Absolutely not! What we’re saying is that regardless of where you are currently, regardless of your circumstances, you can work with whatever limited resources that are available to you, and make your dream come true.

Being successful by the world’s standards is good. But at 1Africa we also value and promote living life with purpose. Your being materially successful is not all that matters to us; finding your purpose in life is just as important. Life begins to have meaning when you discover what you were created for. If finding your purpose or your way out of a difficult situation is a strong desire of your heart, we invite you to click on the banner below and watch a video in which we share with you the foundations of a purposeful life.

A Mother’s love

0

The love of a mother for her children is about as close to what the Bible describes as “agape” love as we can get as human beings. In most cases, a mother’s love is absolutely unconditional. This past week-end we celebrated our mothers, as well as the mothers of our children and grandchildren. Many of our mothers have preceded us into heaven and we find a lump in our throats, wishing we could have just one more conversation; one more hug; one more chance to say, “I love you, mom.” My advice to each of you is, if you still have the chance to say it – SAY IT.

We all know kids have their own special way of thinking, and I’m always amazed (even though what they say can be funny) at how much wisdom is found in the way they view the world. These are questions put to elementary-aged children about moms. Some of these, you may have seen before and if you have, read them again!

Why did God make mothers?

1. She’s the only one who knows where the scotch tape is.

2. Mostly to clean the house.

3. To help us out of there when we were getting born.

How did God make mothers?

1. He used dirt, just like for the rest of us.

2. Magic plus super powers and a lot of stirring.

3. God made my mom just the same like he made me. He just used bigger parts.

What ingredients are mothers made of?

1. God makes mothers out of clouds and angel hair and everything nice in the world and one dab of mean.

2. They had to get their start from men’s bones. Then they mostly use string I think.

What kind of little girl was your mom?

1. My mom has always been my mom and none of that other stuff.

2. I don’t know because I wasn’t there, but my guess would be pretty bossy.

3. They say she used to be nice.

What did mom need to know about dad before she married him?

1. His last name.

2. She had to know his background. Like is he a crook? Does he make at least $800 a year? Did he say NO to drugs and YES to chores.

Why did your mom marry your dad?

1. My dad makes the best spaghetti in the world. And my mom eats a lot.

2. She got too old to do anything else with him.

3. My grandma says that mom didn’t have her thinking cap on.

Who’s the boss at your house?

1. Mom doesn’t want to be boss, but she has to because dad’s such a goofball.

2. Mom. You can tell by room inspection. She sees the stuff under the bed.

3. I guess Mom is, but only because she has a lot more to do than dad.

What’s the difference between moms and dads?

1. Moms work at work and work at home, and dads just go to work at work.

2. Moms know how to talk to teachers without scaring them.

3. Dads are taller and stronger, but moms have all the real power ’cause that’s who you got to ask if you want to sleep over at your friend’s.

What does your mom do in her spare time?

1. Mothers don’t do spare time.

What would it take to make your mom perfect?

1. On the inside she’s already perfect. Outside, I think some kind of plastic surgery.

2. Diet. You know, her hair. I’d diet, maybe blue.

If you could change one thing about your mom, what would it be?

1. She has this weird thing about me keeping my room clean. I’d get rid of that.

2. I’d make my mom smarter. Then she would know it was my sister who did it and not me.

Some pretty hilarious responses there which just go to say that a mother’s love is unconditional. Mothers are priceless gems! If you’re a mom reading this, the 1Africa team salutes you!

Walk A Personal Journey

0

I was very young, not even a teen yet, when one afternoon my mom, a woman who values prayer, called my sister and me into her room and asked us to kneel. She explained that the prayer we were about to pray was one to invite Jesus into our hearts, and if we prayed sincerely, we would become children of God. Meaning, we will now allow God to be the one guiding us as we go through life. She led us in a short prayer that took less than 3 minutes.  That was a significant moment in both our lives, but being kids, nothing seemed to have a changed for us – we thought! Immediately after that payer, we went back to what was of utmost importance and pleasure to us, playing with friends.

Many years went by, and as you may have guessed, we went to church, we prayed, we sang in the choir, but none of this made much sense to me until the day I decided I wanted to know God for myself, rather than go through the motions of things my parents taught me.

It was only in my late teenage years, that God became real to me.

Today, my relationship with God is based on the trust I have in Him, knowing that His love for me and His character stand firm. I know without a shadow of a doubt that I can depend on Him at all times. This is not something I was taught, but something I have personally experienced.

Why am I telling you this story? I’m glad you asked! It’s simply because you will never truly know God through some else’s experience. Mom did extremely well by introducing me to a relationship with God, but the responsibility to write my own story, to know what is true and not true about who people say God is, lay with me. I have my own experience and I cannot be swayed from what I know God to be.

Here is a snippet of prominent American actor and filmmaker Tyler Perry in an interview where he tells how he kept his faith in God during the most difficult times in his life, something his mom taught him when he was a kid.

So many things are said about God, some even say He doesn’t exist. Don’t you want to have a personal experience with God, a story that you could also tell one day? Choose to put aside what the Internet and opinionated men have to say about God. Get to know Him for yourself. If this is something you are willing to do, we would like you to watch a short video we have compiled which highlights how you can begin a relationship with God. We invite you to click on the banner below and watch the video.

Big Up Africa: Keep It Real

0

With unrealistically high beauty standards being set by the media and the advertising industry, few are the women who are ready to embrace their natural beauty. In an effort to conform to what television describes as “beautiful”, African girls have gone from wearing weaves and more recently, Brazilian hair, to applying chemicals that lighten their skin tone.

Skin-whitening creams have been popular for years among young African women, and growing up as an African girl, I saw many women falling for the popular belief some people in our African communities have – that women with light skin are the most beautiful. I also saw how women who used lightening creams over time lost their beauty and one could no longer tell exactly what colour their skin was.

This week, Ivory Coast’s health ministry announced a sweeping ban on skin-whitening screams in their country. This is a move we at 1Africa would like to commend on our weekend feature – Big Up Africa.

Lightening creams are known for causing skin cancer, and you would be surprised to learn that these products could also lead to hypertension and diabetes. It is for these health reasons that the ministry of health in Ivory Coast has decided to ban these products and we at 1Africa applaud this decision. Many African girls have been deceived and today are living with devastating consequences.

True beauty cannot be fabricated. So ladies, love your unique self, love your skin and keep it real!

Jongo: Africa’s First Superhero TV Show

0

From the pen of Gareth Crocker comes “the world’s first mainstream African-based superhero” in a new television show – Jongo.

Johannesburg-based film and television studio Motion Story announced on Friday that production is underway – in fact, half of the first season has already been filmed.

Jongo tells the story on an unlikely hero set in the “New York” of Africa – Johannesburg.

“While Jongo will be sold as an international superhero series, we wanted the show to have a distinctly African soul. Moreover, we wanted to showcase the beauty and dynamism of the continent and of South Africa in particular. So many films and television shows focus on the problems Africans face. Jongo will emphasize all that is wonderful and positive about this great continent of ours,” Crocker says.

“Our vastly experienced production crew has worked in some 30 countries and our cast features diverse and exciting talent from across the continent. While we’re not yet ready to reveal the identity of our lead actors at the moment, we are extremely confident that many of these talented people will soon become household names.

“Unlike many other international superhero films and series, Jongo will focus on telling a very human story which will be amplified by impressive physical effects. We will not, however, overwhelm the show with superfluous computer-generated scenes. Jongo is, at its heart, a comedy drama. I can assure you that it won’t look like a glorified video game.”

Shot primarily in Johannesburg on some of the world’s most advanced camera rigs, Jongo tells the story of a young man, Eli King, who acquires an array of supernatural abilities after an alien crystal is found in a cave at the Cradle of Humankind. The stone is left to him by his father, an enslaved miner who is murdered shortly after escaping from the cave. As Eli tries to deal with the death of his father and sets out to find the men responsible, he must also grapple with the powers of the crystal and how it will indelibly alter the course of his life. What Eli doesn’t know is that the men he is hunting have crystals of their own and need Eli’s stone to fulfil an ancient and devastating prophecy which will threaten the lives of millions.

Stop Judging Yourself

0

It is a natural and healthy thing to be our own critics. Just recently, one of my colleagues wrote an article on the importance of self-reflection. She explained that getting in the habit of reflecting on the things we do will help us improve in certain areas of our lives. You can find the article on the importance of self-reflection here. But there are those who take criticizing themselves to another level, I’m one of them! On many occasions, I’ve proved to be my own worst critic and had a consistent pattern of judging myself harshly. Anybody like me out there? It has sometimes been about the way I look, or a task I carried out which, by my own judgement, was not good enough though results were positive. At times, I would beat myself up because someone didn’t approve of me and I would drown in my own thoughts, wishing I had done something differently, or put extra effort in to be noticed.

Someone said: “The first step to being unhappy in life is to try to please everyone”, and they are right!
So, why should you stop judging yourself? I believe we would deal with our failures better if we start by settling the following in our minds:

1. No matter how well we put our “best self” on, no matter our efforts; not everyone will find us attractive or interesting; not everyone will see value in us. That’s fact! So living life trying to please every person we meet is a terrible waste of time.

2. Getting our own approval is something we cannot do without. If you want to succeed in life, start by believing in yourself, and believing that failure doesn’t define who you are. “A man cannot be comfortable without his own approval.”– Mark Twain

Issues of self-esteem and confidence are more pronounced in some than they are in others. As you read this article, you may be struggling to see value in your life, but you desperately want to. Perhaps all you’ve thought of yourself is nothing more than an ordinary person. Perhaps you’re one who endlessly judges your appearance, your abilities to achieve something significant.

It’s time you begin to see and think differently about yourself, because it all starts in the mind. The moment perspectives change, your actions too will begin to change. One thing that brings us to see the truth about who we are is a relationship with our Creator. He alone can reveal to you why He made you and what He has placed in you. Would you allow Him in your life today?  Click on the banner below, the video you watch will help you establish the first steps towards a relationship with God.

“You have been criticizing yourself for years, and it hasn’t worked. Try approving of yourself and see what happens.” – Louise L. Hay
