YOLO You Only Live Once

0

Ever heard of the term YOLO (You Only Live Once)? This is a common phrase used among people, especially young ones my age.

This is a term that encourages people to live life to the full and without limitations at all. YOLO captures the thinking of young people.

Is this life all there is or is there more? I think it’s important for us to look at how the gospel defines life compared to how the world would define it. The world says: there is no certainty of afterlife. However, there is the certainty we are all going to die, and so we’d better enjoy life while we still can.

This world views life as just natural. There is little or no spirituality involved and almost certainly nothing about eternity.

The book of James 4:14 says: “What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes”. This scripture reminds us of just how small and insignificant we are. Our lives are an eye blink in the depths of eternity. Whereas the world sees the time we have here on earth as the highlight of our existence and should be focused on our OWN happiness. This goes beyond pleasure seeking.

I think we all have the right to make our choices and we have the right to fulfil ourselves and enjoy life. As humans we ought to choose what is best, we search for ultimate satisfaction. And this on-going pursuit of pleasures is proof that we still haven’t found what we are looking for.

Jesus provides a completely different life here on earth than our culture expects. Jesus calls us to live completely selfless lives, lives that are committed to living a life of love. The two great commandments are loving God and loving people.

We All Make Mistakes

0

“The FEAR of being nothing, achieving nothing and becoming nothing should be way bigger than the fear of making mistakes”. These are the first words I read on a certain piece. I was reading the article and thought to myself, “I have to share this”. It’s about why not making mistakes is in fact the biggest mistake you could ever make.

1. Mistakes help you discover who you truly are.

With every mistake that we make we discover more and more about ourselves, about who we are, about our limits, about our capabilities, about what we can and cannot do. They help us be more compassionate and more tolerant with ourselves and others.

2. Mistakes teach you valuable life lessons..

By making mistakes you will in fact learn valuable life lessons and you will become a happy learner. There is so much we can all learn from our mistakes, and the moment we see them as lessons rather than mistakes, we will no longer have this crazy fear of encountering them along the journey.

3. Mistakes teach you to forgive.

One of the greatest lesson you will learn from making mistakes is forgiveness. With every mistake that you’ll make, you will learn how important it is to forgive yourself and many of the people around you. You will understand that you are not perfect and that perfection doesn’t really exist, only our intentions of doing our best. And who wants to be perfect anyways? Perfection leaves no room for improvement.

4. Mistakes help you let go of fear.

NOT MAKING MISTAKES – isn’t that actually the biggest mistake you could ever make? Life isn’t about avoiding mistakes but rather embracing the idea that mistakes will come your way and being willing to learn from these mistakes. Let go of your fears and allow yourself to really experience life.

5. Mistakes teach you how to live a life without regrets.

Believe it or not, if you play it safe you will have more and more regrets about the things you did not do rather than the things you did do, you will regret not making more mistakes and learning. Personally, whenever I hesitate doing something because of the fear of making mistakes, I imagine myself on my death bed ( I know, a bit too crazy but it works ) looking back at my life on what I achieved. By doing so I realize that if i don’t take action NOW, I will have regrets.

6. Mistakes help you grow and evolve.

If you don’t make mistakes how can you expect to GROW and to EVOLVE as a human being? How many of us get stuck because we allow the fear of making mistakes to paralyze us? How can we expect to learn anything new if we don’t allow ourselves to make mistakes?

7. Mistakes teach you how to be happy.

You gain confidence, courage and experience every time you make a new mistake in a very narrow field and in time you will get better and better at the things you love to do. Remember Thomas Edison? He failed more than 10,000 times while working on the light bulb and in the end he succeeded.

So don’t beat yourself up when you do make a mistake and fail along the way. We all learn everyday.

Do you sometimes beat yourself up for making a mistake or failing? Perhaps sometimes you feel like everyone is laughing at you and has labelled you a failure? Click on the banner below.

#ThrowBack World Cup 2010

0

Yesterday marked five years to the day since the 2010 Soccer World Cup kicked off in South Africa.

The tournament, despite Bafana Bafana’s early departure, remains one of the country’s finest sporting moments.

When Siphiwe Tshabalala rocketed his shot into the top right-hand corner to give Bafana a 1-0 lead over Mexico in the tournament opener, South Africa was on top of the world. That euphoria lasted 24 minutes until Mexican captain Rafael Marquez equalised, and the harsh reality is that there have not been many moments since then that have given the footballing public something to celebrate.

World Cup 2010

In exactly five years, South African football has gone from the highest of highs to the lowest of lows, with last month’s report from the US Justice Department putting the entire World Cup legacy in jeopardy after allegations emerged that bribery secured the country the right to host the spectacle in 2010.

There have been many other disappointments along the way, but none more serious than the most recent one.

Five years later, we take a look at how South African football has moved on since the “Feel it, it is here” days.

JUNE 11, 2010

The World Cup kicks off in Soweto. Bafana Bafana take lead against Mexico through Tshabalala and the country is on cloud nine for 24 minutes until the equaliser. Bafana lose 3-0 against Uruguay and then, despite beating France, are eliminated at the group stage. Spain win a tournament that we will never forget, and Bafana leave with their heads held high after the France win.

It’s Not Over

0

We all go through this journey of life, and sometimes you feel there is no way out of your situation. I’ve been thinking of where I’ve been and how I came out of those situations much stronger and wiser.

God is good and I am a living testimony. It’s not over until God says so. I want to encourage you today to hold on and don’t give up as yet.

Here’s a song by Israel Houghton and New Breed just to encourage you and remind you that your time and season will come.

Its Not Over, Its Not Finished
Its Not Ending, Its Only The Beginning
When God Is In It, All Things Are New
All Things Are New
I Know Its Darkest Just Before Dawn
Might Be The Hardest Season You Experience
I Know It Hurts, Wont Be Too Long
You’re Closer Than You Think You Are
You’re Closer Than You’ve Been Before

Lead:
Look To The Sky, Help Is On The Way
Its Not Over, Its Not Finished
Its Not Ending, Its Only The Beginning
When God Is In It All Things Are New
All Things Are New
Something Is Moving, Turning Around
Seasons Are Changing, Everything Is Different Now
Here Comes The Sun, Piercing The Clouds
You’re Closer Than You Think You Are
You’re Closer Than You’ve Been Before
Look To The Sky, Help Is On The Way
Our God Is Faithful (Faithful To Say)
Its Not Over, Its Not Finished
Its Not Ending, Its Only The Beginning
Its Not Over, Its Not Finished
Its Not Ending, Its Only The Beginning
When God Is In It
When God Is In It

Lead:
When God Is In It, There Is No Limit
When God Is In It, Its Not Over
Its Not Over
When God Is In It, There Is No Limit
When God Is In It, Its Not Over
When God Is In It, There Is No Limit
When God Is In It, Its Not Over

(x2)
Its Not Over, Til God Says So
So I Count It All Joy
He’ll Make All Things New
Its Not Over, Til God Says So
So I Count It All Joy
Its Not Over, Its Not Over

Don’t Label Me Please

0

Most of the time we don’t even know people well enough, we don’t pay attention to things long enough to engage on a unique level; yet we pass judgment so easily.  I think it’s time we do things differently and break the habit of putting labels on people.

I’ve been interested in this topic for a while now and wanted to write about it but didn’t know how to express myself.

I’ve always seen people put labels on each other without knowing the real damage a label can have on someone. I started to think maybe I should look more into why people actually give labels and what are the real damages of putting labels on others and placing them into categories.

I came across a video online that gives a clear picture and says so many things without the person having said a word. How society sees you and judges you without knowing you, your background, culture etc.

Most of the research I’ve done and the people I’ve spoken to & interacted with also feel strongly about this topic too. I think people resort to labels to help them in describing the person based on their actions or behaviors. Some labels can be misunderstood and harsh. It’s an offensive habit and it hurt others. Labels are used everywhere, especially high school, where certain groups of “cool kids” (as they would call themselves), don’t want to hang with the “boring kids”. I was once in high school and I know there are so many cliques, to the point where you feel you don’t fit anywhere, and that kills your self esteem.

Society will always see other people as the losers, nerds, rockstars, black, white, geeks, fat, skinny, weird, drop outs, stupid etc. It’s like everyone’s segregated. I wonder if the labeling will ever stop, will people stop judging others?

A person might dress in all black and you call them gothic or freak. Maybe deep down inside the person just likes the colour black. Labels are like covering someone’s real identity, you’re basically giving them a costume.

No one wants to be labeled. No one wants to feel pushed into a group or certain category. It’s dehumanizing and it pushes us away from each other.  Don’t label me please, it’s killing me inside.

Here’s a video I found online. How do we break this cycle?

Maybe you’ve also been called names, perhaps even in a place like church; where you feel you should feel loved and protected, instead it has let you down. Talk to us, click on the banner below and share your story.

5 Foods To Boot Out Of Your Fridge

0

Five foods to boot out of your fridge.

When it comes to food, FutureLife dietitian Angela Bentley advocates everything in moderation. There are however, some exceptions to this rule – there are foods that we should eat a lot of, for example fresh fruit and vegetables, and there are foods that we would be better off never buying again.

Here is a list of five foods to boot out your fridge for good:

1. Brick margarine

The ’bad’ member of the margarine family, brick margarine costs less for a reason. Brick margarines are the hard margarines usually bought in foil packaging. While tub margarines are usually made up of unsaturated fats, most brands of brick margarines contain some saturated fats, but more worryingly –up to 15% trans fats. Trans fats are man-made fats formed during manufacturing, they cause damage by increasing triglyceride and LDL (bad) cholesterol levels, while decreasing HDL (good) cholesterol levels. Research has shown trans fats to increase, amongst others, risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and cancer.

2. Processed meats

These include cold deli meats, viennas, and other sausages, bacon, smoked chicken, etc. These can be very convenient protein options for packed lunches and quick dinners, but because they usually look nothing like their previous unprocessed selves and don’t come with labels we actually don’t know quite what we are eating. Deli meats are often high in saturated fats and are loaded with sodium, nitrates, and other preservatives to keep them fresh. Risks associated with these preservatives include various types of cancers and lifestyle diseases.

3. Processed cheese

Processed cheese may be packaged as individual slices in plastic or as cheese spread in bottles. It looks like a bit like cheese, it tastes a bit like cheese, but you start noticing the difference when you heat it – It doesn’t melt like cheese. Processed cheeses contain either fermented cheese or milk protein concentrate as a base, but undergo a lot of processing to become what you eventually eat. They are loaded with sodium, emulsifiers such as sodium phosphate and colourants – all in all, not really something that you want to put into your body.

4. Mayonnaise and creamy dressings

Admittedly mayonnaise isn’t bad in the same way that the previously mentioned foods are, but regular mayonnaise is extremely high in energy and fat and that is the problem. Just 1 tablespoon contains about 100 calories, made up almost entirely of fat. The situation with creamy sauces and dressings is similar and these are often also loaded with artificial flavourants.

5. Regular cool drinks and other sugary drinks

Generally all of the energy in Sugar sweetened beverages comes from sugar in its most processed form, leading to spikes in insulin and glucose levels. It is no surprise that excessive intake of sugar sweetened beverages are associated with weight gain, obesity, metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, gout, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

I Thought I Knew

So when I switched to “full time” mode online/digital. I thought I knew everything I needed to know about writing/blogging, social media etc. And I thought I had it all figured out, but I was very wrong.

My story will hopefully help you avoid some of the problems you may be facing now or facing down the line when your business or your blog website starts taking off.

The first one came as a real shocker that crushed all my motivation and high hopes.

There are no guarantees at all when it comes to your target market. One thing you will realize when you start writing is that, not everyone will like or share what you write. Sometimes you write a piece thinking it will reach that level, 100 you’ve been waiting for.

Writing one article/blog is tough. So much thought and creativity needs to be in place when you write. You think of who you are writing for, why the topic is relevant, what will make them read the article and click like or share it with friends. You also need to take into consideration how your piece might impact the person reading and if they will keep coming back for more. This is hard, but fun. I’m doing this full time now and truth be told, each article is unique on its own and that takes a lot of time and thought.

Someone I know, who happens to be TV show/program blogger said, “you only need one GOLDEN blog a day to succeed and keep track of the online behavior of your audience. The rest are just “extras” and they might make you lose your focus from your main one. Just be careful once you start growing your blogs”.

I thought that once I was in that “full time mode” it would be easy to just write a piece, but that’s not the case. When you write it comes from a pure sincere place and you get personal sometimes. People come into your zone, you become vulnarable in a way, because you are now an open book. I’m not complaining though; I love the hard work and the grind.

I used to write way back when I was in highschool, and now I’ve actually started loving it again.

When no one reads your articles or commends on them, not be discouraged. KEEP WRITING, don’t stop.

I once thought “I know it all” but after discovering that writing is as an art, as well as reading other people’s blogs, I knew I still had so much to learn, and there’s always something new to learn.

Maybe you’ve also been in this kind of struggle, where you’re not 100% sure if this is what you want, if you truly enjoy doing it and want to pursue it; click on the banner below and we can continue the conversation.

Winter Checklist: How To Dress

0

Dress for the weather–that’s an important element of dealing with cold winter weather. But how do you do it?

Dress in layers. Use many thin, warm layers rather than a few thick layers. It will insulate better and allow you to strip off layers if the temperature climbs.

Dress for the appropriate activity level. Dressing for an active day of skiing will be different than dressing for a sedentary day of ice fishing.

Buy or find a pair of insulated boots. Ideally, the lining should be wool or synthetic–not cotton. Linings can be purchased separately. You can purchase boots already with the lining, or use boots two sizes larger than usual, and use a lining.

Wear winter socks. Warm winter socks are important in keeping warm dry feet. Wool is best, although good synthetic “fleece” socks are often quite good. You can layer socks, but be careful that your feet are comfortable and the circulation isn’t shut down.

Use a good quality coat, parka, or jacket. Generally speaking, the thicker the better, whether it is a synthetic ski jacket, a wool pea coat, or a down jacket.

Wear a base layer. A “base layer” is long johns, union suit, long underwear, or whatever can provide a warm, light base to your winter gear. Merino wool products are recognised as one of the best base layers available.

Wear a hat. While it’s a myth that most body heat escapes through the head, covering any exposed body part helps retain body heat.

Wear gloves or mittens. Fingers and hands are very vulnerable to the cold, so keep them covered. Very thin gloves (like “magic gloves”) are better than nothing, but comfortable, warm gloves are important.

Hand warmers can be useful, especially if you don’t have shelter handy. They can be purchased at any outdoor or hunting store. Never use these as a substitute for dressing warmly, however.

Wear more than one layer on your legs. Oddly, some people will wear five layers on their torso, and only one layer on the legs. At minimum, have a base layer like long underwear and an outer layer, like snowboarding pants.

Keep dry. Being wet will cause chill to set in more quickly than if you’re dry. Have waterproof or at least water resistant outer layers.

TIPS:

  • Don’t over-dress. Being sweaty and clammy is dangerous.
  • You should be warm–not hot–and dry at all times.
  • Dress for function over fashion. Of course, you don’t have to dress unfashionably in the cold. But in truly bitterly cold weather, dress to keep warm regardless of how you look. You might look like a geek, but you’ll be a warm geek!
  • When dressing, keep in mind whether you will be exposed to moisture (sleet, wet snow, rain and/or wind). Both moisture and wind will make you colder faster than if the weather is dry and calm.
  • Mittens insulate better than ordinary gloves as the fingers insulate each other better when packed close together. However, the main disadvantage is that they make it difficult to do some things with your hands e.g. turn the page of a newspaper.
  • You can often purchase appropriate winter gear through military surplus catalogs and websites. Often it is just as good as pricey name brand gear and a fraction of the cost.
  • In an emergency, you can further insulate your jacket, shirt, or the like by stuffing newspaper, dry leaves, or the like in your clothes.

Keep these in mind and winter won’t be such a bad season afterall.

Kickstart Your Day

Have you ever had days where you just don’t feel like doing anything, you just want to stay in bed and sleep all day? Well I do have days like that but at the end of the day, I realize just sitting around and not doing anything won’t help me reach my goals.

But on some weekends I just chill and do nothing but I look back and realize I’ve accomplished nothing. These are called zero days. Zero productivity, zero accomplishments, and zero wins.

It’s ok to relax and unwind once in a while, but if it happens too often, you need to change something. And the best time to start that change is in the mornings.

The morning is the most important part of our day. It sets the tone and tempo for the rest of the day. If you’re feeling unmotivated in the morning, you’ll likely retain that feeling all day long.

I have 5 key things I do every morning to ensure that I stay productive and motivated all day.

Wake up early

I’m not a morning person at all, but I suck it up. Life needs to happen, and that starts with morning. So 8 hours of sleep does wonders. Start waking up earlier and giving yourself more time in the morning. Try waking up at 6 am, or 7 am, or even 8 am.

Pray

Time to connect with God is far more important. Kick starting my day like this leaves me feeling all calm and ready for the day. Each morning I ask God to help me improve in certain areas of my life, I ask him to bless the day etc.

Exercise

Starting the day with a workout provides massive benefits. I have at least 10min of skipping, do few jumping jacks and squats. Well I’ve failed when it comes to pushups, so I don’t do them.LOL

The aim is to get your blood flowing, and pump oxygen into your brain. You’ll see that you feel more energy and this stays with you throughout the day. You’ll feel revitalized, and any tiredness you felt from waking up early will vanish after a short run.

Drink water and eat rich

The moment you wake up, drink a glass of water. Staying hydrated is important, especially in the morning because you haven’t had any water all night long. Also, don’t skip breakfast. This is the most important meal of the day for a reason. Starting with a rich and healthy breakfast gives you the energy you need to power through your mornings.

Organize yourself

Starting your day with a quick organization and planning session help you accomplish more tasks. When you’ve written down the tasks you have for the day, and prioritized them, it gives you a good roadmap to follow for the rest of the day.

Most of the time, people are unproductive simply because they don’t know what task to handle next. With a priority list sitting in front of you all day, you won’t waste time trying to decide what to do.

By implementing these key things, you’ll see lots of improvement in your life. A super productive morning gives you a huge boost and motivates you for the rest of the day. You’ll be able to do more and finish things faster, leaving you with more time in the evenings to enjoy with your friends and family.

What do you do in the morning that helps you to be productive and motivated all day and what is your feel good song?

This is my feel good song every morning.
