Things NOT To Say At A Job Interview

0

There are some things that you should not say during a job interview, regardless of how much you would like to share your opinion with the interviewer.

Because there are so many candidates for just about every job opening, saying the wrong thing just makes it easier for the hiring manager to reject your candidacy.

You usually won’t get a second chance once you have made a mistake and said something inappropriate or something that will make the interviewer think twice about hiring you.

Here’s a quick list of what not to verbalize in a job interview.

Top 10 Things NOT to Say In a Job Interview

How much does this job pay? Don’t be the first to bring up salary, if you can help it. Mentioning pay can send the message that all you are after is money, an especially grave sin at the first meeting.

My boss was incompetent, etc. Prospective employers will likely side with your current or previous supervisor and assume you will be difficult to manage.

Saying I’ll have your job when asked where you see yourself five years from now. Displaying confidence is a good thing, but overly cocky statements will not endear you to interviewers.

I hate my job, perhaps in response to a question like why are you applying for a new position. A better approach is to emphasize why the new position is appealing and, when reflecting on your current job, to emphasize what you have learned and skills you have developed.

You look great. Avoid any comments that could be interpreted as flirtatious no matter how stunning your interviewer appears.

I’m not aware of any weaknesses when asked to share some shortcomings. Always be prepared to communicate some weaknesses; just make sure the quality is not central to the job. Sharing a historical weakness that you have worked towards improving can be an effective strategy.

Why have earnings slumped at your company during the past two quarters? A better angle would be to stay clear of anything sounding negative. Rather, frame your question more neutrally. For example: “In your view what are some of the biggest challenges which your company faces at this juncture”?

Can I work from home or how much vacation would I get? Save these types of questions until after you have been offered a position or the employer might question your motivation or work ethic.

You’ll regret it if you don’t hire me, I’m the most qualified. You can’t possibly know this unless you have met and evaluated all the other candidates. Overconfidence is a real turn off to employers.

I don’t have any questions for you.Prepare some questions to ask that build upon your company research or something which your interviewer has shared with you. Another approach is to ask the interviewer a question about their experience with the organization, such as: “What do you enjoy most about working at ABC company”?

Follow these guidelines to help you in your job hunt process.

I Am Christian: Denzel Washington

We see the big Hollywood stars on our screens – big or small – almost everyday. The paparazzi feverishly take tonnes of pictures of them to try and fill the tabloids’ never-ending thirst for stories on these stars. Some of the stories are true; some are just rumours. With social media, today we can follow our favourite stars on Twitter or Instagram. We love to know what they get up to in their personal spaces – what they eat, wear and do. For the religious among us, we want to know what their beliefs are. Do they go to church?

I love Denzel Washington. Without a doubt, I’m his Number 1 fan worldwide. I’ve watched almost every movie of his to date. I’ve heard him speak on several occasions and listened closely when he speaks about God, church and reading his Bible daily. So I thought I should share a few things he told GQ Magazine in a past interview.

He spoke of reading the Bible every day and shared how he had an intense encounter with the Holy Spirit in his twenties. “I read from the Bible every day, and I read my Daily Word,” he told GQ’s Michael Hainey. The devout Christian and son of a Pentecostal minister also talked about his father’s influence in his life. Washington said it was not difficult to be a preacher’s son. “He wasn’t a taskmaster, but there were certain things you couldn’t do. He had his own church, and it was a long Sunday, because you had to be there all day.” While Washington felt some rebellion as a teen when his church attendance began to feel like “a job,” he’s thankful for his father’s presence and influence. “Everyone I grew up with didn’t have a father. I had a father. My father was a decent man. He was a very spiritual man and a gentleman.”

The double Oscar winner had an unusual encounter with the Holy Spirit as a young person that left him changed. It happened in the church he still attends, 30 years later.  “The minister was preaching, ‘Just let it go,’ Washington recalled. “I said, ‘I’m going to go with it.’ And I had this tremendous physical and spiritual experience,” he says. The incident provoked the fear of the Lord in the budding actor. “It did frighten me,” he said. “I was slobbering, crying, sweating. My cheeks blew up. I was purging. It was too intense.” Washington’s experience left him with questions. “It almost drove me away. I called my mother, and she said I was being filled with the Holy Spirit. I was like, ‘Does that mean I can never have wine again?’ Then Washington urged a creative approach to a spiritual discipline: “Put your slippers way under your bed so when you get up in the morning, you have to get on your knees to find them. And while you’re down there, start your day with prayer. Ask for wisdom. Ask for understanding,”.

Here’s a man that’s not afraid to speak up about his faith. In the book of Mark God says “If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his Father’s glory with the holy angels.”

What do you believe? If you believe in something strongly, you won’t hide it and be ashamed of it. It could be that you’re on a journey of understanding faith and need, like Denzel, to know a little more about what you’re getting yourself into. That’s OK. When you do something with understanding, it produces far better results than just going in blind. Please click on the banner below if you’d like to know more about God and faith.

10 Things You Need to Know About Africa Day

0

1. Seventeen countries gained independence from European colonisers between 1958 and 1963, and to mark their liberation, several states starting celebrating African Liberation Day around that time.

2. The newly-liberated countries felt the need to express solidarity with one another, and in May 1963, 32 African countries met in Addis Ababa to form the Organisation of Africa Unity (OAU). It was a major political force on the continent until the 1990s.

3. Since 1963, 21 more states have joined, notably South Africa, who only became part of the organisation in 1994 following the end of white minority rule.

4. Ironically South Africa is a founding member of the African Union, which evolved out of the OAU.

5. The OAU became the African Union because of the increasingly economic, rather than political, nature of the challenges faced by the continent in the 1990s.

6. Although years in the making, the African Union was officially launched in Durban, South Africa, in 2002, and 10 years later former Foreign Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma became the first women chair of the AU Commission (the AU’s administrative arm).

7. Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe is the current chairman of the African Union.

8. The organisation remains headquartered in Addis Ababa, although it’s legislative arm, the Pan African Parliament, is in Midrand, South Africa.

9. While Africa Day is only a national holiday in a handful of African countries, it is widely commemorated.

10. The theme for 2015 is “We are Africa”.

Seasons Change

Seasons change. People come and go. That seems to be the story of our lives.

Years ago I was in a different city. I was young and enjoying the life of being a freelance creative and doing what I really loved. For me, that was radio. I enjoyed the freedom of having to do so many things all at once, the freedom of having flexible hours during the day to pursue other areas of talent that I felt I had. But there came a time when I felt I needed to leave the city I was in and move to a different city altogether. I had no friends, no family in the new city, but I was firmly convinced that I needed to move on.

I felt as though someone was saying to me, “This period of your life is over; It’s time to fulfill the next phase of your life and do something new.”

In my heart, I could identify this as God’s voice speaking to me. I had no doubt about it. Still, I had mixed emotions about the whole thing. I was afraid of change and of going to a foreign city. But I was ready to see what God would do in my life in the new season.

What voice influences the decisions that you make in your own life? Is it friends, family or your own opinion and judgement? I am convinced that, in order to make the best decisions for our future and progress, the voice that must speak loudest is God’s.

Sometimes God gets finished with something and we keep hanging on to it. Inside of me, I wanted to start on this new season of my life, but my brain – the logic-driven side of me – wanted to stay. I had lots of plans and opportunities in the position God was instructing me to leave, and I didn’t want to let all that go. But, eventually I did do what He told me to do and today I am doing something completely different.

Remember that God changes things and when He does we must be willing to follow His leading. I ask again: whose voice is speaking to you as you navigate change in your life? Here at 1Africa we’d like to introduce you to a God who wants to be your guide and to show you the way.

“Why Must I Give To Africa?” – Floyd Mayweather

Floyd Mayweather said during an interview: “Why should I donate money to Africa? What has Africa done for me”?

Late last year, radio personality Kelly Mac interviewed outspoken and undefeated boxer Floyd Mayweather. The boxer confessed that he has a “good heart,” but that he does not feel obligated to give to charities, specifically in Africa. “[People] say ‘well, he got all this money, why is he not giving to Africa?’” starts Mayweather. “Well, what has Africa given to us? What has Africa came and gave to my children and to my family? Things work two ways.”

He then discussed the threat that he believes giving too much money to charity can cause. “Everybody’s always talking about giving, giving, giving. That’s the problem. Everybody’s doing so much giving, at the end of the day, they may not have nothing. Then they’ll say ‘why was he giving this to that person, and giving this to that person when he should have been saving?’” Mayweather goes on to say that he should be able to do whatever he wants with his earnings, such as using it to provide for himself and his family. “I never got involved in the sport of boxing to say ‘I’m going to fight and make hundreds of millions of dollars and just give it all away.’ If I’m gonna mess money off in a bad way, I’m going to spend it on myself. I’m going to do what I want to do with my money. You hear people talking about, ‘well, he should…donate to this or donate to that.’ No, I should donate to Floyd Mayweather, donate to Floyd Mayweather’s family. Because that’s what it’s about.” According to Celebrity Net Worth, Mayweather, 38, is worth $170 million. Mayweather also has a charity, The Floyd Mayweather Jr. Foundation, in which the foundation declares to help underprivileged youth in Las Vegas, Nevada. Mayweather has been in the news for reportedly spending $50,000 for rapper Nicki Minaj to appear at his daughter’s birthday party.

Here’s a full video of the interview.

Logically speaking, there probably is a great deal of sense in what “Money” Mayweather is saying. But, what’s also true is that not everything is driven from a position of material gain. Whether we admit it or not, life consists not only of the physical benefits but of spiritual matters too. They are things we can’t fully understand at the logical level but, when we approach them with a different, spiritual view, we know we’ve done the right thing.

That kind of spiritual consciousness begins when we embark on a journey to discovering God. Because spiritual matters are rooted in what we don’t see – which goes against what our senses tell us – many people are too afraid to begin and choose rather to play safe. We all have to make personal decisions for ourselves, though. If you have questions about God and faith, please click on the banner below and check out our video.
