Big Up Africa: Shaun Naidoo

South African Short Film to Screen At Cannes Film Festival

33 Films, a South African Production Company produced an independent Short Film ‘The Beginning’, which has been accepted by and will participate in the 2015 Cannes Film Festival in France. Today we say Big Up to the producer, Shaun Naidoo, who is so ecstatic that this passion project has gained recognition from arguably the most prestigious film festival in the world. The film will participate at the festival as part of the short film corner.
The Beginning’ stars Tumisho Masha and Letoya Mangezi, two familiar faces in the South African film and television scene.

Synopsis:

The story is about Lisa (Mangezi), a mother dealing with the loss of her young child. We are introduced to her as she is having breakfast with a man named George (Masha) sitting across from her. With George’s help and guidance, Lisa goes through various emotional stages as she comes to terms with her own mortality. A number of questions and themes are explored and the viewer is left with a particular perspective that is contrasted against their own belief.

We chatted to Producer Shaun Naidoo to get some insight into the man behind 33 Films:

What was your role in this project?

“I was one of the producers which in the context of a small budget film, means I did any and everything. The role of a producer is very logistical and perhaps managerial in nature. You are ultimately responsible to ensure that the production runs smoothly. Luckily for me, I was flanked by two other strong producers in Tumisho and Brad”.

Is it harder to get started or to keep going? What was the particular thing that you had to conquer to do either?

I think it is harder to keep going than to get started, and I think this is true for most things in life. For me, I started in television production and for the first 3 months, I had to work for free just to prove myself. Staying relevant, and often simply staying employed is extremely difficult. One’s desire to keep going has to be matched with hard work and strong relationships.

How have you discovered members of your team and how do you keep the relationship with them strong?
Brad, who wrote and directed The Beginning, directed a corporate project for me a few years ago.  We clicked and our relationship has grown steadily over the years. I met Tumisho when I booked him to do some voice over work on some radio and TV commercials I was producing.
As a trio, we have grown extremely close and are already producing our next film project together. Our relationship stays strong because we share a common interest and have each other’s best interest at heart.

What makes a film great for you? Are there certain qualities that make a film better?
I think any great film will ultimately tell a story, and tell it well. Irrespective of the genre, if a film has a universally appealing story, then it will capture the audience. I think the better film is the one that has a high production quality and strong performances.

What did you do to keep it fresh and different from films we’ve seen before?
The Beginning is a short film which in itself can be very tricky. You have a limited amount of time to tell a story so every detail is vital to doing that. In this film, we explored some deep human themes and introduced a perspective on life, which we think is unique.

What are your expectations at Cannes?
Just being a participating film at the world’s oldest film festival is enough for us already. We are however very excited and hopeful to gain some traction for our next project which is a full length feature film. In addition to a festival, Cannes also has a market section with many potential buyers and distributors etc. so we are looking to connect with these people.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to have a life/career creating films?
My advice would be to start as early as possible. And take on any role you can get your hands on, just so you learn about all aspects of the process. When I first started, my job was to label tapes – I’ve since worked in almost all capacities in production.

The film has been entered into a number of festivals in South Africa and internationally with Cannes being the first international film festival it will be screened at this year.

The Beginning is not available for public viewing as yet, but the trailer can be viewed here:

The entire film was shot on location in Johannesburg, South Africa. Newcomer Bradley Katzen wrote, directed and edited the film and also designed the original score. This short film is a product of passion but it is also the result of many favors. They funded the film mostly by themselves, but there were many people that provided vital support with no benefit to them. And all they had to do was ask.

Adapting to Change

We meet people in our journey of life and, sometimes, someone who starts off as a stranger ends up becoming your closest friend . You create great memories with them but one day, for whatever reason, we have to part ways.

It’s not always that the friendship went sour or even that we grew apart, but simply because they are moving to a different country, different job or even different stage in their life. Someone said that the only thing that is constant in life is change.

It’s always a difficult place to find oneself but, as with everything in life, change is hard but often for the best. I’ve had moments when I have had to say goodbye to dear friends I’ve known for many years.

Saying goodbye to friends and adapting to change in life is not an easy thing to do, but it’s something most people go through from time to time. Just because your friend is moving or starting on a new journey of life doesn’t mean you won’t still be close. Giving your friend a heartfelt send-off is a great way to show you’re still invested in the friendship.

I’ve written poems, letters and even dedicated a few songs to friends. This one song in particular is still on the top of my playlist of songs to dedicate to a friend(s).

Boyz II Men – “How Do I Say Goodbye”.

I feel truly fortunate to have known my friends and for them to have been part of this journey and look forward to seeing them achieving their set goals. To my friends, am not saying goodbye but “Til next time.”

To end this post, here’s something worth thinking about. In the Bible, Jesus gives a promise to everyone who believes in Him, that He will never leave them or forsake them. Through the ages, there have been countless expressions, from various people who have taken the step of faith, of the validity of this promise. Jesus promises to be a friend who will not leave. So, though we may often feel the pain of our physical friends leaving, spiritually we know we’re taken care of.

We’d like to share more about Jesus with you and introduce you the possibility of relationship with Him. If you would like to take the next step with us, please click on the banner below.

Furious 7 Makes Box Office History

0

Furious 7 raced to the top of the domestic box office, picking up a massive $143.6m in its opening weekend.

That establishes a new high-water mark for the month of April, blowing past the $95m debut of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, as well as marks the highest grossing kick-off for any film in the Fast and Furious franchise. It also ranks ninth among the top ten openings in history.

Audiences flocked to see star Paul Walker in one of his final roles. The actor died in a 2013 car crash at the age of 40 and his work on the film was completed by using digital technology and a series of stand-ins.

“This is a bittersweet instalment in the franchise,” said Phil Contrino, vice president and chief analyst at BoxOffice.com. “[Walker’s] passing made this movie more intriguing for people who hadn’t seen some of the instalments. It raised awareness and its success is a tribute to him.”

Universal Pictures spared no expense in bringing the latest chapter in the fast cars and gravity-defying-stunts series to the big screen, shelling out $190m on the production. It released in 4 003 North American theatres, earning $14m on 365 Imax screens and $11.5m from premium large format screens. Going into the weekend, most analysts estimated that the film would open in the $115m range.

Paul Walker

Foreign numbers have yet to be released, but they promise to be steroidal. Internationally, the film rolled out across 10 500 screens in 63 territories.

“This is the next member of the billion dollar club and that’s a rarefied place to be,” said Contrino. “This thing is on fire.”

With an A CinemaScore and strong reviews, Furious 7 could be one of the few modern blockbusters that hangs in for more than a few weeks. The month of April is lean on blockbuster fare and Furious 7 won’t get serious competition until The Avengers: Age of Ultron debuts on May 1.

Like the rest of the world, yesterday I went to go see the latest installment in the Furious franchise, I was left in tears at the end of the movie as we said goodbye to Paul Walker.

And in a fitting tribute the song, See You Again, is featured in the movie soundtrack which is a touching tribute to the late actor who died in November 2013.

Here’s the video of the soundtrack.

Financial Freedom

0

Financial freedom is the ability to do whatever a person wants to do without being limited by money concerns. For some, it may mean becoming a billionaire, while for others, it may mean being content with what they have. Taking the right actions will help you become closer to your idea of financial freedom.

Develop a long-term plan. You need clear goals to keep you on track in order to be successful.

  • On a piece of paper or computer document, make a list of each goal that you want to reach in order to be successful. Some examples are to pay off your credit cards, save money for a down payment for a house, or retire at a certain age.
  • List a desired target date for reaching each goal.
  • List an estimate of what it will cost to reach each goal.

Make a budget: A budget is your playbook for how to spend your money. You need it to keep your spending within reason and help you to ensure that you have enough money to cover your current needs as well as to save for your long-term goals.

Resolve to live debt-free: If you are currently in debt, plan your budget so that you can get out of debt more quickly by making extra payments. If you are not in debt, continue to live that way by putting off your purchases until you have saved enough to cover them.

Reduce your expenses: Cutting spending by even a small amount on a regular basis will make a big difference in the long run. Live frugally by learning to recognize the difference between want and need.

Increase your income: It is wise to have more than one source of income, both to increase your savings more quickly and as insurance in the event that you lose your job. There are a number of ways to supplement your income, from working a part-time job to developing streams of passive income.

Invest your money: Your money will grow much faster if you invest it rather than leaving it in a savings account. The increase in value will enable you to reach your goal of financial independence much more quickly.

Try using these tips/ideas and see see how far you can go being financial free. Good luck.

Does My Hair Define Me?

0

I read an article recently about women with natural hair having a low self esteem. I must say this fueled major debate on social media and other online platforms.

Lots of women with natural, kinky, ethnic hair were a bit offended. I must say I was slightly offended too, but I had to remind myself of who I am. My hair does not define me.

So, the article claims that research was made by a cosmetic company called Bountiful Hair, saying that women with natural hair have lower self-esteem than women with treated hair (relaxed hair).

According to BlackHair.com, natural hair is “hair whose texture hasn’t been altered by chemical straighteners, including relaxers and texturizers.”

The most common natural hairstyle is an afro, which many black women consider an undesirable look. The hair is many times matted and coarse, and is not considered appropriate for a business environment. Many employers consider the look untidy, and ban individuals from wearing this style.

According to the study by Bountiful Hair, natural hair being viewed as a messy look is causing many women, who wear their hair in that manner, to feel inadequate and less desirable than their counterparts whose hair is chemically treated. Those feelings of inadequacy cause women with natural hair to lash out at women with treated or straightened hair, and in turn lowers their self-esteem.

Over 3,000 women participated in the study and Pilar Ciara Jones, who says she participated in the study, stated: “at one point I was using a gallon of milk and a dozen eggs on my hair every day to try to soften it. That’s when I knew it was time to make a change. I got a relaxer and a Brazilian weave and I have never felt prettier.”

Bountiful Hair says the feelings expressed by Jones are common among women with natural hair.

Here’s a video of India Arie singing that she’s not her hair.

Do you think the article was fair? Do you think they should have not written it in such a way that it makes women with natural/ethnic hair feel uncomfortable?

The Bible says “But if a woman has long hair, it is her glory. For her hair is given to her for a covering”- 1 Corinthians 11:5

Self esteem issues are matters of self work. People can give you all the tools/motivation you need, but it all starts with you first. If you love yourself enough and know who you are, you wont let an article based on a study define you.

Trevor Noah To Replace Jon Stewart

0

Comedy Central announced yesterday that South African Trevor Noah will be the new host of The Daily Show following Jon Stewart’s retirement from the desk later this year. The 31-year-old comedian can speak six languages, knock out amazing accents and has the potential to bring a more international angle to the late-night circuit.

SA comedian Trevor Noah says he is honoured to take over from Jon Stewart as the host of the Emmy Award-winning, late-night parody newscast The Daily Show, Comedy Central said on Monday.

The Viacom-owned network said it selected Noah, because he is an “enormous talent” and “wickedly funny”. His premiere will be announced at a later date.

Hailing from the township of Soweto, Noah joined The Daily Show With Jon Stewart as a contributor in late 2014.

“He and the team at The Daily Show have created an incredible show whose impact is felt over the world,” Noah said in a statement. “I’m excited to get started and work with such a fantastic group of people.”

South Africans celebrated Noah’s big step up, saying his talents will appeal to a global audience and he will change people’s perceptions of the country.

Noah’s appointment marks the second major handover at the comedy cable network. Larry Wilmore took over Stephen Colbert’s time slot in January after he left the network to succeed David Letterman, who is retiring in May as the host of CBS Television’s Late Show.

But Noah is younger than the middle-aged Wilmore, Colbert and Stewart, who said last month he was giving up the gig but gave no clues about his next career move.

Stewart was 36 when he became the host of show in 1999. During his long tenure, the show, which airs weeknights at 11pm and averages slightly more than a million viewers each night, became influential in US politics and culture.

“Very excited to welcome our next host: @Trevornoah! That’s right – another guy in late night from Soweto,” Stewart said on Twitter.

Dear Bearded Gentlemen

0

There was a time when growing a proper beard required only one thing – the face’s owner stopped shaving. Times have certainly evolved and beard maintenance now reflects on one’s personality. First lets address this issue of not cutting or trimming the beard. I know its the “IN” thing now and all guys want to look “attractive” for the ladies; but truth is, not all ladies love unkept beard or worse some ladies don’t like beard at all. I have some great tips to creating and sustaining a great looking beard.

We don’t like this.

Beard

We love Common because he has mastered this particular look.

commo

Here’s everything you need to know about grooming and how you can also achieve the look.

  • The square shape. It’s an inherently masculine shape that gives guys an edge.
  • If you have an oblong or oval face shape, trim your hairs closer on the underside of your chin, but leave a bit of length on your cheeks. Round face? Create length by leaving more hair on your chin and less on your cheeks.
  • Using a trimmer with a No. 1 guard, taper the hair on your neck starting just above your Adam’s apple.
  • Trim near the top of your cheeks, if necessary, creating a line parallel to your jaw line.
  • Lastly, comb down your mustache and trim hairs that fall below your lip line using scissors or a trimmer.

Tips and Tricks:

  • Shampoo and condition your beard every day, just like your hair.
  • Once a week, or as needed, use a trimmer with a long guard to get rid of stray hairs. Then trim your neckline with a small guard starting at your Adam’s apple.
  • If necessary, use a razor on your neck between your collarbone and your Adam’s apple, being mindful of which way the hair is growing.
  • Taper, or fade, your neckline for a more natural look and less maintenance in the future.
  • Use a beard oil daily to soften your hairs and add a scent, if desired.
  • Comb your beard when in the shower to exfoliate the skin beneath your facial hair and to straighten your hairs for easier trimming.
