Review – Gambino’s ‘Awaken My Love’

Childish Gambino’s much anticipated album, Awaken My Love has been out for just over a week and as expected, it is really “out there”.

If you have not listened to it, prepare your ears.

Gambino, whose real name is Donald Glover, has dropped a Soul album, and in that respect, he delivers.

Gambino also dropped a little surprise when he released, in collaboration with Microsoft, a VR (Virtual Reality) experience through an App – compatible with either Apple or Android – for the song “Me and your Mama”.

While it is ideal to have a VR headset, you can be part of the experience through your normal screen camera. You simply need to plug in your earphones for a better experience.

Without a doubt the album is 100% Soul. There is no hint of Hip Hop or even a sense that he was following through from his 2013 release Because The Internet – in fact it feels like you’re listening to a totally different artist.

But perhaps that’s the point – to show his range or versatility in his craft.

He was recently asked about using a high, raspy, and almost buzzing tone on the track “Redbone,” for example.

People had been asking if he had relied on a computer to achieve all of it.

According to Gambino, that was not the case:

“There was no vocal pitching on the album. I just sang differently… I just switched it up, trying to make people feel differently about the thing… Some sounds on it aren’t instruments at all. They’re just my voice or clicks on my tongue.”

I guess that tells us all we need to know about the man’s talent.

As if the album and the VR experience weren’t enough, this weekend, Glover won Best Actor in A Comedy Series for his show, “Atlanta” at the Critics’ Choice Awards.

It all seems to be falling into place for Mr Glover.

You can listen and buy the album here.

Also check out the VR app here.

The End of a Chapter for Mos Def?

Last Week the rapper Mos Def, also known as Yasiin Bey may have closed the chapter on his South African adventure.

Mos Def was forced to leave the country after a run in with South Africa’s immigration officials.

In January this year, Mos Def – who had been living in Cape Town for an extended period – tried to leave the country using what is known as a “World Passport”.

While the document is recognised in some countries, it is not considered an official document by the South African government.

He was then detained in South Africa pending a court case, which had been postponed several times.

At the time, Mos Def released a short freestyle titled “No More Parties in SA”, taken from Kanye Wests’ “No More Parties in LA”.

After the case was postponed several times, Mos Def, through his lawyers,  finally conceded to using an unrecognised travel document and unreservedly apologised.

While his apology was accepted, he was forced to leave the country within 24 hours.

Mos Def has been labelled an undesireable person by the SA government.

While he can appeal this, it is unclear if he will do so.

Bey’s colleague, friend, fellow artists and music producer, Ferrari Sheppard posted: “And we out”, on his Instagram, as they left Cape Town airport.

It marks the end of an incredible journey for Mos Def in South Africa.

While in the country he was seized with being the creative director of a clothing brand called Unknown Union. At this stage no announcement has been about how this relationship will proceed going forward.

He had also begun to feature on a radio show for the online streaming platform – TheEyeTV.

It is also unclear if he will be continuing with that venture.

Despite leaving the country, Mos Def maintains he will be retiring from the music and acting scene in the year to come.

He has released a number of songs with Ferrari Sheppard, such as Dec. 99th. Among those is a track called “Hymn,” which is out on Tidal. In addition, he appeared on a Tribe Called Red’s “R.E.D.” (from We Are the Halluci Nation), and performed live with BADBADNOTGOOD when the band was in Cape Town.

Mos Def recently said he had made a few commitments for one or two films, which may be his last.

Whatever he does, we know it will be fantastic and wish him all the best.

#PrayForYe

A few days ago, he sat down with Surface Magazine to talk about a million ideas – as you would expect of Kanye West.

What we didn’t know is that a few hours after the interview went live, he would be admitted into hospital – presumably for exhaustion.

It is reported that West was admitted to a Los Angeles hospital on the night of  21 November 2016, where he was undergoing assessments.

Since then, we have not heard much, apart from rumours from “sources”.

A few days before was admitted, Yeezy had walked off stage mid-performance during one of his concerts on the Saint Pablo tour.

Shortly after that he announced he would be cancelling the rest of the tour. It is believed he would be losing at least 30 million dollars as a result.

West had also announced that had he voted, he would have cast his ballot for Donald Trump.

At the same time, Yeezy also fired proverbial shots at various celebrities, including Beyonce – who he accused of blackmailing the organisers of the Video Music Awards. West argued that Beyonce had threatened not to perform at the VMAS, if she didn’t win an award.

I am putting my career, my life, my public well-standing at risk, when I talk to y’all like this. Beyoncé, I was hurt, cause I heard that you said you wouldn’t perform unless you won [VMA] Video of the Year over me, over Hotline Bling.

At the same show, West asked Jay Z to call him, seemingly to mend their relationship.

Jay Z, I know you got killers, please don’t send them at my head. Just call me!” West said. “Talk to me like a man!

Right now all we know is that Kanye is in hospital but don’t know the severity of his condition.

The fake gossip sites continue to peddle rumours and hearsay, making it slightly more difficult to determine what is truth.

All we can do, is #PrayForYe.

The latest update into The Mind of Pablo

Kanye West is constantly on the move – working.

If he is not on his Saint Pablo tour, he is designing the next season of his Yeezy range in collaboration with Adidas or he is in the studio, making music.

And if that’s not enough, he is also working on various concepts in architecture, film and other business ventures.

West has to balance this with his role as a father of two children, and a husband to another celebrity powerhouse, Kim Kardashian-West.

He has come a long way since his infamous interview with Zane Louw on BBC1 Radio where he went on a “rant” about being shut out of the fashion world simply because he was a rapper or the “you don’t have all the answers Sway!”, conversation.

What’s new

West’s latest exclusive interview with Surface Magazine comes at the perfect time.

Through this almost 40 minute conversation, we get another glimpse, a new perspective, into what is occupying his mental space.

The reality is, it is becoming more difficult to ignore West. He is part of the most influential leaders of popular culture.

The conversation also comes at a time when at a recent concert, West confessed that while he had not voted in the latest US elections, he would have cast his ballot in favour of the controversial president-elect, Donald Trump.

This comes after several celebrities including Jay-Z, Beyonce and Pharrell had all come out in support of, and campaigned on behalf of, Hillary Clinton.

West’s latest revelation has predictably been met with mixed views.

During the interview he discusses the thought behind his company Donda – named after his mother – how he envisions communication in the future and his ideas on cultural class, among other things.

If anything the interview is Kanye – raw and honest.

You don’t have to guess what he means, he will tell you.

I must be honest, I had to watch and read it a few times to fully digest it.

Have a look and read for yourself.

Surface Magazine obviously has full rights to it, so you can catch it here.

TheEye.TV – the future of radio?

Radio is dead. Long live radio.

That is the tagline you are met with when the site first opens.

TheEye.TV is an online radio platform hosted by renegades – in my opinion.

People who have refused to conform to the “commercial” rules of engagement set by men in suits.

The renegades include SA Radio legends Jon Savage and Catherine Grenfell. Jon and Cat are not new to the games. Together they have been in the music and radio for decades.

Grenfell and Savage are joined on the online radio platform by Gigi Lamayne – who is making her name in the South African hip hop scene.

And just to make sure they have covered all their bases, they have Jack Parrow – an Afrikaans rapper – hosting his own show.

Just the beginning

Having only listened to the platform for a short time, I am certain it will get better.

I was even more convinced when I noticed that US rapper and actor Mos Def, now known as Yasiin Bey is also co-hosting a show with friend and artist Ferrari Sheppard.

yasiin-bey-tweet
Bey has been a resident of Cape Town for a while.

After relocating to South Africa, it appears he was joined by Sheppard to collaborate on a few projects, including a clothing brand called UnknownUnion.

Bey and Sheppard hosted their first show yesterday afternoon from 14h00 to 16h00. It was repeated between 19h00 and 21h00 on the same day.

From what I have heard, I may have found a new home.

I like the fact that the hosts are different, I’m sure there will be very few rules.

I think we can also look forward to listening to some different music.

You can listen live to TheEye.TV here.

Childish Gambino – Awaken My Love

The wait is almost over for the Childish Gambino fans as he is set to drop his next album on 2 December 2016 – after almost three years.

Because The Internet was the last album Gambino delivered and that was back in 2013.

It was ground breaking at the time because it came with a script. You could listen to the album and follow the album and at the end of it, it felt like you had just watched a short film.

Gabino announced his latest project via a tweet – after being very quiet from social media – also for an extended period of time.

awaken-my-love
But Gambino – whose real name is Donald Glover – has kept himself busy with other projects.

His new series “Atlanta”, debuted earlier this year and it appears to have been picked up for a second 10-episode season.

In addition to that, Glover was also recently cast as a young Lando Calrissian in the forthcoming 2018 Han Solo Star Wars film.  Something to look forward to.

Gambino has dropped the first track off the Awaken My Love album, but judging from my attempts to get to it on iTunes, it is not yet available in Africa.

He has also launched an online store where he is selling posters for the album cover artwork.

And once you can pre-order the album here.

I have no doubt, this will be one of those “on repeat” albums for the next while. Gambino is yet to disappoint.

Trump wins US elections

0

After months of a brutal campaign, Donald Trump has achieved the unthinkable, and won the US Presidential election.

In January next year, the President-elect will be officially sworn into one of the highest offices on the globe.

It’s no secret, the world didn’t see this coming.

We may have toyed with the idea, but few commentators, political analysts and experts actually believed a first time politician would occupy the White House.

In fact, the polls got it terribly wrong.

Trump was first to reach the 270 electoral votes needed to win the race.

While Clinton won the popular vote, by at least 200 000 ballots.

Trump obtained 59,692,974 votes (47.5%), while Clinton came in at 59,923,027 votes (47.7%).

While it seems bizarre that the person who got the most votes, lost the race, that is the nature of the US electoral system.

To put it simply, at the time that the US electoral system was developed, the founding fathers did not believe enough in the American public to make the right political decisions.

Instead of directly voting for presidential candidates, the people would elect members of the Electoral College to represent them and their votes at the ballot.

These are the votes that count for the presidency.

Therefore, while Trump obtained less votes – from the actual masses – he can still win, from Electoral College votes.

Soon after the result came in, Trump made an attempt at a unifying speech, saying he would be the President “for all Americans”.

Saying he had just received a call from Hilary Clinton, Trump congratulated her on running a tough election campaign.

He also acknowledged Clinton’s years of service in her various roles in government.

“Hillary has worked long and hard and we owe a major debt of gratitude to her for her work for this country,” said Trump.

In her concession speech, Clinton expressed her disappointment but offered to “work with him (Trump) on behalf of our country”.

“I hope that he will be a successful President for all Americans,” she said.

This is not the outcome we wanted or we worked so hard for, and I am sorry that we did not win this election for the values we share and the vision we hold for our country.

But I feel pride and gratitude for this wonderful campaign that we built together, this vast, diverse, creative, unruly, energised campaign. You represent the best of America, and being your candidate has been one of the greatest honors of my life.

I know how disappointed you feel, because I feel it, too. And so do tens of millions of Americans who invested their hopes and dreams in this effort. This is painful, and it will be for a long time.

But I want you to remember this: Our campaign was never about one person or even one election. It was about the country we love and about building an America that’s hopeful, inclusive and big-hearted.

Meanwhile, delivering a statement on the 2016 elections, President Obama did his best to unite the US, amid several protests against Trump, in various parts of America, including right outside the White House:

“We have to remember that we’re actually all on one team…We’re not Democrats first, we’re not Republicans first, we are Americans first. We’re patriots first. We all want what’s best for this country,” said Obama.

You can view his full address here.

The world will no doubt be watching Mr Trumps every move and whether he can deliver on his promises – especially whether or not there will be a wall, which the Mexicans are allegedly going to pay for.

D-Day for the USA

0

Tomorrow, 9 November 2016, the world will wake up a very different place, as the United States heads to the polls.

And depending on who wins, it will be a very different place.

After months of hard graft on the campaign trail, three very brutal & highly personal debates, television adverts and FBI investigations, it comes down to what the American people will have to say through their vote.

Hilary Clinton, and her supporters – who include Jay Z, Beyoncé, and Lebron James – will be relieved after the FBI took a decision not to lay any criminal charges over the “email scandal”, just days before the election.

Clinton had been under FBI scrutiny for using a private email server during her term as Secretary of State, something the Americans don’t take very lightly.

Trump on the other hand would have hoped to gain some mileage from that investigation – which he seems to have done.

According to the New York Times’ latest election polls, at the time of writing, Trump was polling at 43%, compared to Clinton’s 45.3%.

I’m sure many would agree this is far too tight a race, which shouldn’t have been the case.

As Barack Obama put it, at a recent Clinton rally: “Don’t boo… vote!”

That’s all that matters.

We will be watching this one closely for obvious reasons.

Whatever happens in the US election will affect the rest of the globe.

Here’s hoping the new president-elect of the free world is one that will be mature enough to sit in the oval office.

A level-minded individual with policies intended to give people the opportunity to lift themselves out of poverty and create their own opportunities.

One that will advance global peace – through peaceful means and not more violence.

Once that believes in the protection of the individual’s rights – in as far as they do not infringe on the next person’s.

You get the picture.

All the best America.

Apple vs The Rest – Who is winning the innovation war?

0

Silicon Valley tech giant Apple, recently launched their new range of Mac Books.

While such an announcement is always highly anticipated, the big news has been the slump in the company’s sales.

For the first time in 15 years, Apple’s annual revenue has declined, falling from $233.7bn in 2015 to $217bn in fiscal 2016.

Apple also reported profits of $45.6bn for 2016, down nine per cent from the $53.4bn reported for 2015.

Several theories have been advanced to account for this decline, including the rivalry between Apple and Samsung.

Many have argued in recent times, that Apple is failing to keep up with the innovation that Samsung keeps delivering – after all, they do have Virtual Reality (VR) going for them.

But Samsung has challenges of its own – exploding phones. Some airlines, including South African Airways,  have decided to ban some Samsung models on their flights.

Anyway, the question many would like to understand is: who is winning the innovation battle?

Many would agree that Apple has revolutionised the working world. Their Macbooks, iPhones, iPads etc – have changed the way the world operates. I am sure my designer friends would testify to this.

While Microsoft PC’s – which are widely accessible – have enabled people to tap into the technology space – Apple has taken it a step further.

While this was happening, Samsung always kept close – producing products, mainly phones – that would give Steve Jobs’ baby a run for its money.

The most recent criticism of Apple, by many across the world has been the decision to move away from the headphone jack, opting for wireless ear pods. They have also taken away the USB ports in some of the Mac Books.

This has been seen as some, as a step backwards – but is it?

I recently sat down with a very creative person, who works – on a daily basis – with Apple products.

When asked what he thinks of the slump in Apple iPhone sales, he responded: “Apple is so far ahead, that they seem like they’re lagging behind”.

Mind, blown!

Into the future

Think about it, in two to three years, USB ports and headphone jacks will be a thing of the past. The world is truly going wireless.

We already have fridges telling us to restock our milk supplies and cars that park themselves.   So why is it so hard to accept headphones that aren’t attached to your phone through a chord?

This changed my thinking.

It reminded me of the time Apple first came on the scene – it was never intended to be like Microsoft.

It was always intended to be a high quality experience that took into account what the USER wanted and never the other way round.

If you have watched the ‘Jobs’ film starring Ashton Kutcher, you will recall the programmer who gets fired because he hasn’t produced a font. A font! Jobs fired one of the best programmers in Silicon Valley, because he hadn’t worked on a font.

Was he crazy? Absolutely, however it was necessary.  He wasn’t looking to “mass produce” – he was looking for a catalog of quality products, that while ahead in innovation, made the user feel like a million dollars (some of the products feel like they cost that much – but they’re so worth it).

It’s not just about how fast you can produce something. It’s whether your innovation changes the quality of life, of your users.

Mac Books have certainly done that.

So think about it, who is actually winning the innovation war?

Nyovest delivers on #FillUpOrlandoStadium

Cassper Nyovest spoke about it, lost weight for it, stood at traffic lights & handed out flyers for it and he has delivered it.

On Saturday 29 October 2016, Soweto came to a standstill as it welcomed one of South Africa’s biggest superstars for his #FillUpOrlandoStadium concert.

Some media houses are even dubbing it a “festival”, because of the artist line up.

It would seem Nyovest was intent on delivering something for the history books – and he did.

The show, which is a follow-on from last year’s #FillUpTheDome concert, attracted so much intention, even Nyovest’s arch rival AKA could not resist. The two were seen together after the show at a nightclub in a friendly embrace. Before that, during the day, AKA had tweeted Nyovest, wishing him well on his big day:

aka-tweet
With 30,000 people in a stadium for a local artist, it would have been difficult for AKA, or anyone else for that matter, to ignore Nyovest.

In fact, some of South Africa’s biggest names including DJ Fresh and Euphonik threw their weight behind the event and were seen backstage.

The production was outstanding.

From the stage design, to the lights and choreography, it was world-class.

Nyovest was supported by local artists including Emtee, Riky Rick and Babes Wodumo.”

He even brought in a guest from up continent, the Nigerian-born Wizkid.

As if the concert was not enough, the day after the show, Nyovest dropped another single and video “Abashwe”.

During a radio interview on 5FM, on Monday morning, Nyovest said #FillUpOrlandoStadium and the new single served to inspire young people from all walks of life that if he could make it, they could too.

Asked about his relationship with AKA, Nyovest said it was baby steps from here on.

He hinted at a possible future collaboration. He also revealed that the two had already put together at least 5 tracks, that no one knew about. Crazy!

Whatever that collaboration looks like it would be Mega (excuse the pun).

For now, Nyovest will no doubt bask in the glory of his historic achievement.

And he already has his sights in South Africa’s biggest venue – the FNB Stadium which can hold up to 90,000 people.

We can also expect a DVD of #FillUPOrlandoStadium to drop this time next year.

These are definitely exciting times for African artists as they make an aggressive attempt to stamp their legacy in the music and entertainment business.

Once can only imagine the kind of show he wants to put on next year. Because no matter what you think of Nyovest, he truly is an entertainer.
