Is Life A Race ?

I watched a movie few weeks ago where a college professor taught his students that life was a race. He explained that the process leading to conception, pregnancy and child birth was the perfect example and proof that life itself comes into being after a race. The ideology presented to youngsters in college was that, if you’re not first, you don’t matter. Therefore, you must work as hard as possible, do whatever it takes to make sure you are top, excellent. Because if you’re not, you’ll be trampled down. So this specific professor was not afraid to employ extreme methods just so that he can produce the best engineers his country has ever seen but unfortunately, they were so extreme at times that students couldn’t take it anymore and would commit suicide.

There is nothing wrong with instilling in a kid a sense of pursuing excellence in life. In fact, this teaching is vital in this generation, and Africa in particular needs big dreamers, moguls in technology, finances, politics, arts and so on.

If you’re a student in college right now, by all means, give your studies your all. We get one life and one chance only to make an impact in our time. So take what you are doing seriously and seek to be the best in what you do.

But in doing that remember that life should not be a marathon. Hard work and excellence will pay off, that’s for sure. But there are other aspects of life not to be neglected. They are not your career, your hard earned money or standing in society, but they may save you when your back is against the wall. Your relationship with people is one of those aspects.  As you do what you do, never neglect building and maintaining good relationships. Never ever think it’s okay to pursue that excellence, power and first position in life by cheating, backstabbing or stepping on other people. These dishonest actions will come back to bite you in one way or another, sooner or later. So, Is life a race ? Some say life is a race, some a gift, some a mystery, or a journey ; However you chose to see life, consider yourself being on a journey in which you are given a blank canvas, with resources, abilities and a limited amount of time enough to design a print so unfathomable and spectacular that it will make a life better, and the world a better place.
